How We Started Our VW Photo Booth Business with a Facebook Bus and a Dream

If you’ve ever made a big decision that felt a little wild but totally right — you’ll get this.

In 2023, I had just decided to switch companies at my day job and ended up with a rare two-week break between roles. With a little extra time on my hands and a curious mind, I stumbled across the concept of a VW Photo Booth. I was instantly hooked.

With nothing but an idea and a lot of enthusiasm, I dove headfirst into researching how to make this thing real. I started writing a business plan, searching for the perfect VW bus online, and dreaming up every little detail. And then — yes, I even made a PowerPoint. I presented it to Brian in our living room with the ultimate goal of convincing him to go on this journey with me.

Once I found the yellow VW bus on Facebook Marketplace, that was it. I was all in. We figured, even if this doesn’t work out, we’ll have a cool story and a vintage bus to drive around in. So, we said yes.

I’ll never forget the moment the former owners dropped the bus off in our driveway and drove away. My stomach sank. I remember standing there thinking, Did I just make a great business decision... or did I talk Brian into financial ruin?

That mix of fear and excitement lit a fire under me — and I’ve carried it with me every single day since. That was the beginning of The Old Fashioned Photo Bus, and in 2024, we officially hit the road and joined Wisconsin’s incredible wedding vendor community.

Today, we get to roll into weddings, watch people light up, and see guests let loose in front of the camera — all from the back of a little yellow bus!

We’ve learned so much along the way:

• Wisconsin weather is unpredictable (but we’re ready for it!)

• Props bring out the best in people

• And the real magic happens in the in-between moments — the unplanned, candid

We’ve also had the absolute joy of meeting amazing couples and working alongside some truly talented vendors who’ve made this ride unforgettable.

Would we do it again? 1000% yes. Even with the chaos, the learning curves, and the “what did we just do” moments — we wouldn’t trade this adventure for anything.
